Floor Pillows

We have these wonderful floor pillows made in Guatemala from recycled clothing. We get them all from our friend Stephanie of Coleccion Luna. They are so cozy and will add a little bright happiness to any room! They are great for throwing on the floor to watch tv or in a kid's playroom. They can really be added to any decor. We have many different styles and color variations. The great thing is, they can be machine washed! If you need more seating and can't fit anymore chairs, floor pillows are always a fantastic option.

Bridal Shower at Urban Cottage

Carla Kaiser & I hosted a bridal shower at Urban Cottage for her sister Katie Kaiser (they are Concrete Lace, btw). It was really fun! It was a few weeks ago on a Sunday evening. We made it a tea party. Carla brewed up some really great teas and we drank out of their mom, Brenda's tea cups! Carla made her speciality, cucumber sandwiches which are awesome. Amongst other things, we also had pickled shrimp and pimento cheese made by Brenda. We tried to make everything you would have at a traditional tea party! Having Katie's Bridal Shower at the shop was cozy and fun. She opened all of her great gifts and we all enjoyed celebrating her! It is fun to be able to feel right at home in Urban Cottage!

Pink is Awesome!

I LOVE pink. Whenever I see pink, I instantly think of what I can do with whatever I am looking at. I seriously do not distinguish if it is something I really need or can even use. But, since I am aware of it, I am at least trying! I love baby pink, bubble gum pink, hot pink, fuschia, magenta, ballet slipper pink... anything in the pink family. A few years ago I suggested that we should come up with good pinks and add it to our collection of colors we offer in furniture. Naturally, everyone was hesitant. We worked hard and started to produce baby pink furnishings which is a nice soft pink. I have a small 2pc. baby pink hutch in my kitchen. We also have raspberry pink. It is a fabulous reddish pink. Anywhere it would be placed, it would be the statement! It is vibrant and wonderful. One of my favorite pieces we constantly make in our baby pink is a round two tier bamboo leg accent table. The shelves have cane and it adds great texture. I choose to make sure to add the picture so you can see how lovely a pink piece of furniture really can be!

Made in Italy

My mom's family is originally from Sicily. Maybe that is why we are always so drawn to Italian products. Who knows... Maybe it is just because they create beautiful products. I mean who doesn't want Murano Glass salad servers or a pretty little vase. All of the serving pieces are hand crafted in Italy and will make a statement on your table. We not only have salad servers but also cake knives, pasta servers and spreaders. They all have a hand blown large murano glass bead. No two are alike! They really make a special Wedding Gift or Bridal Shower gift if you want to get something special.

Vintage Button Rings

For whatever the reason I am always drawn to big chunky rings, I always have been (you should see my gigantic jade ring I bought in Soho, NY a few years ago). So naturally, I fell in love with Talulah B's vintage button rings. I was at a trunk show right before the holiday's this past winter. I bought my sister and myself each one. I loved them so much, I had to carry them at the shop! They are so fun to wear. The only problem is... it is hard to pick just one! So, I picked a few! Who Doesn't Love Candles

I really try to support all local business! Being an Atlanta local business, I think it is so important. Paddywax Candles are based right in Decatur and are such a great company. We have been carrying the Eco line of their candles and just can not keep them in. But, good news... We just got a huge shipment and all the new wonderful scents. The best part about this line is that even down to the outer packaging, it is eco friendly. The soy candle n a re-usable glass container is packaged in a chlorine free paper pulp box and is biodegradable in 3-6 months and is wrapped in 100% post-industrial recycled paper. Even the ink is soy based! Some of the wonderful candle scents are Mandarin & Lavender, Fresh Grass and Bamboo & Green Tea. I love these candles!

They are a great feel good gift to give yourself and not feel guilty, they are priced at only $16. 

Sweetest Things... Daily Candy

Sweetest Things! 

A few days ago, I noticed that we had some mail in the original mailbox drop in the front of the shop. Rarely do we check that as the mailman always walks our mail right into us! The mailbox has been there for years and years. We tried to keep as much of the shop in its original state as possible. We kept the mailbox, the old fireplace mantle, woodwork and railing going down the stairs. In fact, the beautiful wood floors throughout the first floor are actually original as well! We just had to put lots of work and love into them, and now they are beautiful! Anyhow, in the mailbox was a pretty little envelope with Daily Candy's return address and inside a note and decal letting us know that we were one of the nominee's for 2008 Sweetest Things! We were so excited! Daily Candy has done quite a few write ups on Urban Cottage this year. Carla Kaiser of Concrete Lace was written up for her Mandala Coloring Books, The Akola Project necklaces that we sell and give 100% of the proceeds to, the annual Urban Cottage warehouse sale we have once a year and the latest was our beautiful Wedding Invitations by Breathless Paper Co. Daily Candy has been a big supporter of us at Urban Cottage and we really do thank them for that! I definitely recommend that everyone sign up on Daly Candy's website so you can receive the Daily Candy each day! It is always a little treat!

Reading Glasses

My mom is constantly unable to find her reading glasses. She has probably gone through at least ten pairs in the last few years. Sometimes, she looses them and they are right around her neck. I love to give her a hard time! It is so hard to find fun and cute reading glasses that are not cheesy. I was never on the lookout for them until my mom started to use them. Well, we found these fun reading glasses that are designed in Italy and come with a matching case. We have many ladies come in and buy a few different colors at a time. You can afford to do that at only $20. Reading glasses do not have to make you look old anymore! Thank goodness!

Love Your Bedroom!

My personal living space is something I struggle with. I am so used to making the shop look cozy and homey, and I really do have a fondness for so many different styles and designs, I have a hard time letting go of everything and being settled. I constantly want to rearrange and change it up. I always however, love my bedroom. It is probably my favorite part of my living space. I love bedding and feeling cozy. The word 'cozy' would probably be the word my mother says is my favorite. It is just such a feel good word! It is a great description to describe a happy home! I work so hard to have Urban Cottage have a cozy feeling all the time. Downstairs at the shop, we have an entire area, with one of our Cottage Headboards which we offer in many colors and sizes, where we offer the entire line of Pine Cone Hill Bedding; as well as the Pine Cone Hill Sleepwear (that is a whole other thing I love!). We also have really comfy cotton comfortable comforters which are hand block printed from India and one of my personal favorites, Plover Organic. All of the bedding can be ordered in all the sizes (twin, full, queen and king) as well as the sheets, bed skirts and shams. I actually have quite a few interchangeable bedding ensembles. I like to have it change in the winter and in the summer! But, I honestly love getting into my warm and cozy Pine Cone Hill duvet cover (which is full of a down comforter) in the winter and my Plover Quilt in the summer! There is absolutely nothing more cozy! It is soooo hard for me not to get one of the new Plover Quilts for summer, which is around the corner...

Cards Make You Feel Good

Sending cards to my friends and family is something I have always been good about. I like to send a card just because. It is one of the most refreshing and feel good things, to open your mailbox and see something addressed to you that is not junk mail and even worse, bills. A card sitting waiting to be opened from a good friend makes my whole day. I love the way it feels and really try to do this for the people I care about. I always wanted to carry cards at the shop. We started with just a few cards and have expanded our variety. I guess because I love looking at cards (and even love to make them in my spare time) I have gotten good at finding ones that people fall in love with. Not a day goes by without someone telling us they love the cards we have! I love that! Right now, so many people are going through tough times and a card might just brighten their day! 

Bridal Gift Ideas... That Are A Little Different

Sometimes it is hard to come up with something fun and different for a bachlorette party or a bridal shower. I mean, you can always go to the registry and click on something in your price range and go to the checkout and have it wrapped. But, I always have thought, that is boring! And then, the idea came to me while helping a gal at the shop. She was just like me and wanted to get her friend something she did not know about. I suggested a fun apron and maybe a cute pair of knickers! And if you are looking for some underpinnings, we always have those too! What a fun bridal gift, and all ladies want to look cute while they are cooking! So now I always make this combo one of my staple suggestions. We love our frilly girly aprons, which come in half aprons or full aprons.

I was so excited to get the Alternative Apparel Eco-Cotton cozy stuff back in! We have hoodies, crop pants, shorts and tanks. We try to always have all of these in because everyone loves it! They are based right in Atlanta and make great stuff!

Spring Cleaning

My favorite season, Spring, is right around the corner! I love Springtime. Everything is colorful and looks pretty. I love how the weather is warm in the day and cool at night. Every time right before Spring I feel the desire to clean and organize. I want to clean my place, the shop and especially, organize my closet! Every year without fail (for as long as I can remember), this happens to me. I am not exactly sure why this happens but it just does. I stock up on Caldrea all purpose cleanser (which is great to clean and disinfect everything, and it is all natural and safe) at the shop and go to town! This morning, as I was getting ready, I opened my linen closet and saw all my great baskets and automatically thought, I need more of those. I have everything in my linen closet organized in Seagrass Baskets which are three different sizes. I have one with my sheets, pillow cases, towels (by size), paper towels, cleaning products, etc. They not only help me stay organized, they make my closet look attractive. We always have these at the shop, always! Whenever someone buys a set, they almost always come back for more! They are only $29 a set of three. Vintage Furniture

We have a pair of absolutely fabulous 1940's Metal Garden Chairs. They have been completely cleaned up and repainted. They are one of a kinds and can only be found at Urban Cottage. We have introduced a line of furnishings that are Vintage, Retro, Mid-Century and Art Deco. These pieces can complete any room. Fabu Furniture is a great addition to our Urban Cottage mix.

Concrete Lace at Urban Cottage, Inc.

Concrete Lace is a company of lovely creative ladies (mother, daughter and sister) based in Atlanta and we sell their wares at Urban Cottage all the time! Carla has wonderful handmade pinch pots which have so many uses. I love to use them to put little flowers in them! She also makes mandala coloring books and all natural perfumes. Katie does really special Letterpress. She is so creative and does things that you have never seen before! Her Letterpress postcards represent the intown Atlanta neighborhoods (Virginia Highland, Inman Park, Cabbagetown, Druid Hills...). And, if you want to send a little love to someone, come and pick up an 'Olive Juice' card!

Weekend Trunk Show!

One of our Urban Cottage Favorites (Stephanie of Coleccion Luna) and her good friend (Karri of Jenstones) are going to be having a Trunk Show Saturday & Sunday at the shop. Stephanie has all hand-made Guatemalan Products and Karri is a Jewelry Artist. Madame Mandala will be here both days reading Tarot for all those interested. She is awesome!

We are offering lots of great sales on furniture over the weekend as well! We will be here having fun and enjoying each others company!

Support The Congo!

Heather C & I (and some friends) attended Stephanie Jollock's event for the Congo, Dialog Start One last night. It was an event that was trying to raise as much money as possible to send to help support. She had worked really hard and put on a fantastic event! There were lots of people there. Six Feet Under donated all the food and many different people donated a gift for the silent auction. Urban Cottage donated a gift certificate and a neighborhood tee! Our fave Madame Mandala of was reading Tarot and donated half of the money to Dialog!

We have a "Little Black Dress Room" at Urban Cottage. Some call it a Parisian Boudoir and others the most fun closet they have ever shopped in! We have all black and white clothing. Sometimes, I just can not resist throwing pink in there! It is absolutely my most favorite color (any shade), so I can not help myself! We have the perfect Little Black Dress, the perfect sweet things to go underneath to the most comfy yoga pants and tees. We get new things every week! In fact, we just got in some great new Comfy USA Skirts (all cotton, made in California), Alternative Apparel eco friendly tees and crop pants, Hazel Tops and Eberjey organic cotton knickers and nighty's.
